Hand becoming Figure

2014

plaster, pigment, wax

Hands are like bodies, they have one center mass with 5 appendages extending from it.  I dipped a hand in latex and attached rope to each finger. That thin latex mold was then held in tension within a frame, each finger pulled in the direction of a figure. The thumb, rotating up towards the head can only pull so far, so the process had to be repeated. That plaster cast was once again dipped in latex and stretched even closer to the proportion of the figure. After repeating this process 4 times, I arrived at a figural form, but found the in-between state the most compelling.
