Dictionary Project

2010-ongoing

American Heritage Dictionary

In 2010 I found an American Heritage Dictionary on the street. I wanted to decouple the image-rich margins from the text body and took the book to a printing shop, where they sliced it  on a guillotine. I began to play with the slips of paper, finding relationships between text and image previously subordinated to the central text. As these connections grew, they began to take the form of image/text poem/collages.

The project was set to the side until 2017, where a residency at the Lighthouse Works gave me space to focus on it again. I left that residency with the layouts for 9 separate image poems all formatted to a 27"x108" horizontal scroll, as well as plans for a book of double sided singles. I am currently mocking up the print files for poster copies of the collages as well as constructing displays for the originals.
